who is Patience?
18 May 2025 01:11Patience McCray is a character from Scott Ciensin's Dinoverse series, specifically Raptor Without A Cause and Please Don't Eat The Teacher. These are kidlit in which time travel is possible through the M.I.N.D. Machine, which sends peoples' minds back in time and across dimensions to possess dinosaurs. I've always had the sense that they were published in an attempt to hook Animorphs readers(there is even a flipbook animation in the corner) and it certainly worked for me, but they are nothing like as good as Animorphs.
Patience herself is, in short, a jock-type foster kid with trust issues who's determined to be tough and aloof but has a kinder side. She's been rendered into "a being of pure thought-energy" and anchored to possess a subadult acrocanthosaurus, a big theropod dinosaur. This is not a "normal" acro, but one from a timeline where most dinosaur species are developing sapience. It's got a very different brain structure and forelimbs, somewhat longer and more robust than the real thing's with a humanlike range of arm motion and decent dexterity. It's still tricky for Patience to look at her 'hands' or pick things up off the ground but she can use her jaws and drop something to catch in her claws.
Patience calls her 'host', the original occupant of her body, Marcia. Marcia is mostly 'asleep' but contributes a lot of subconscious, instinctual things that allow Patience to use her body as if born to it. Fortunately she's not too inclined to see humans as food. Maybe if she can smell blood, but Patience has learned to ignore that.
She might be downsized to neovenator scale. Taller than a human and twenty feet long, big enough to create difficulties, but not big enough to be stuck outside all the time. She'd be more heavyset than the Neovenator and with arms about as big as the human's.
